About Institution:
Kasturba Balika Vidyalaya
KBV was set up in 1944 soon after the death of Mrs. Kasturba Gandhi, wife of Mahatma Gandhi by Harijan Sewak Sangh(HSS).
It was started on a plot of land of 2.5 acres donated by Shri Manmohan Dhar in Ishwar Nagar on main Mathura Road in South Delhi. Its initial funding was provided by prominent philanthropists who were close to Gandhiji and his ideals. The objective was to provide quality education to girls from underprivileged families. Mrs. Rameshwari Nehru worked as Manager of the school during its first 20 years.
It is said that Gandhiji himself was present in the school when it was opened on 2nd April 1944 by Shri C.Rajagopalachari who later became the first Governor General of India. KBV is a girls senior secondary school. As of 2020, it has about 900 girl students out of which about 170 live in the hostel which is only meant for scheduled caste (SC) girls. The school has classes from KG to 12th. It is affiliated to CBSE and is a Government aided school, which means that 95% of the salaries of teachers and other staff are paid by the Government of Delhi. The school has Arts and Commerce stream in 11 and 12 classes. There is not much demand for science among the girls who typically join our school. Primary classes were started only in 2016.
History:-
The plan was introduced by the Government of India in August 2004. It was then integrated into the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan program, to provide educational facilities for girls belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, minority communities and families below the poverty line in Educationally Backward Blocks.
Objective:-
Gender disparities still persist in rural areas and among disadvantaged communities. Looking at enrolment trends, there remain significant gaps in the enrollment of girls at the elementary level as compared to boys, especially at the upper primary levels. The objective of KGBV is to ensure that quality education is feasible and accessible to the girls of disadvantaged groups of society by setting up residential schools with boarding facilities at elementary level.[1]
Eligibility:-
The scheme was applicable since its inception in 2004, in Educationally Backward Blocks (EBBs) where the rural female literacy is below the national average (46.13%: Census 2001) and the gender gap in literacy is more than the national average (21.59%: Census 2001). Among these blocks, schools may be set up in areas with:
concentration of tribal population, with low female literacy and/or many girls out of school
concentration of SC, ST, OBC and minority populations, with low female literacy and/or many girls out of school
areas with low female literacy
areas with many small, scattered habitations that do not qualify for a school
The criteria of eligible blocks has been revised with effect from 1 April 2008 to include the following:
An additional 316 Educationally backward blocks with rural female literacy below 30%.
94 Towns/cities having minority concentration (as per the list identified by Ministry of Minority Affairs) with female literacy rate below the national average (53.67%: Census 2001).
